On Saturday, April 20, Urban Releaf celebrated Earth Day with two tree-planting events in two locations: Cesar Chavez Park and Tassafaronga Rec Center. The Cesar Chavez Park event was put together by Unity Council and District 5 Councilmember Noel Gallo, and included volunteers from Kaiser Permanente, Dawoodi Bohra Muslims from Fremont, and neighborhood residents. The event also featured an opening ceremony and invocation from traditional Aztek dance group Calpulli Coatlicue, who blessed the site before the tree-planting began in earnest.
The Tassafaronga Rec Center event was sponsored by Communities for a Better Environment, HOPE Collaborative, Acta Non Verba Farm Project, Tassafaronga Recreation Center, EnCompass Academy and ACORN Woodland. Also participating were Girl Scouts from Troop 30017 and the Buddha Light temple.
Despite the hot weather, volunteers, assisted by Urban Releaf staff, planted almost 100 trees on the two sites.
Be on the lookout for Urban Releaf on upcoming shows on KQED and NBCBayArea, as well as an upcoming PBS documentary.
Big thanks to everyone who came out and made this Earth Day successful!
