For Immediate Release – January 17, 2013
(Oakland, CA) — In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Urban Releaf – an Oakland-based urban forestry 501 c. (3) – will be celebrating the life and legacy of a man who sowed seeds of hope, nonviolence and equality for all. Join us on this national day of public service to plant street trees in West Oakland and commune through music, dance, food and horse rides.
“The National Day of Service gives us the opportunity to honor Dr. King’s legacy and give back to our community by engaging in projects that make the earth a better place,” says Urban Releaf founder and director Kemba Shakur. “It’s a time for us to come together, and engage community partners, youth, and community members on the benefits of planting trees and how they relate to our environment,” she adds.
Almost 600 community members, along with several community organizations, have signed up to assist Urban Releaf on the MLK DOS in planting 40 trees in a West Oakland neighborhood. Other activities include horse rides by the Oakland Black Cowboy Association; folkloric dance performance by Mixcoalt Anahuac; music by The Frat House Boyz, Brotha Chaz and the Peaceful Vibe, and Paradise Free Jah Love; live painting by artists Refa Sanay and Malik Seneferu; and a community clean-up. Food for sale by Taste of Africa. Please bring work clothes and comfortable shoes; be prepared to get your hands dirty and your mind clean.
